The Deacons Welcome You!

The word “deacon” is derived from the Greek diakonos meaning “attendant”.  The twelve deacons of First Church Wenham work together to attend to the needs of the congregation both in worship and in the community because we care deeply about First Church and its members.

We work closely with our minister, Reverend Mike Duda, to plan worship services and other church programs and events, and coordinate our efforts with the other boards and committees of First Church.

Our board meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month during the school year and once or twice during the summer.  We try to understand, discuss and represent the various ideas and opinions of the congregation and to come to a common understanding and approach on church policies and initiatives.  We also:

  • Get to know and support one another throughout the year
  • Are challenged by spiritual questions affecting our faith
  • Are a caring and collegial group striving to become better Christians and to support the spiritual growth and fellowship of our congregation

To attend to the needs of the congregation we:

  • welcome newcomers
  • Work with our minister in planning services
  • Oversee and supervise the minister’s work
  • Work with the confirmation class
  • Arrange for ushers, liturgists and flowers
  • coordinate coffee hour
  • oversee Parish Care
  • serve communion
  • Maintain spiritual and pew literature and supplies for worship
  • Send caring cards to those who are ill or grieving and have significant birthdays
  • are represented on the Hospitality Committee which sponsors  social events
  • are represented on the Church’s Cabinet

We welcome any suggestions toward making the life of our church even more vibrant and meaningful.  Please contact a deacon listed below.

Parish Care

Parish Care volunteers provide occasional meals, rides to medical appointments, and visits to those who are homebound.  Our prayer team prays for members of the church and the larger community upon request.

We delight in adding more members of our congregation to our list of volunteers.  Much joy is gained from aiding another and all efforts are made to ensure that no one person is asked to do too much.

In Galatians 6 we are charged both to bear one another’s burdens and to carry our own loads.Though fiercely independent and carrying our own loads there are times that the load becomes a burden.

Many members of the congregation have volunteered to provide meals, rides, visits and prayers for church members and members of the community.  Our goals are:

  • To share God’s love.
  • To provide a hand where it is needed.
  • To share these opportunities so no one is burdened.
  • To invite other members to lend a hand when the opportunities arise.
  • To increase the number of people who let us know of those who might need help. If we don’t know of a need, we can’t help! The Facilitators for each week are listed in the Newsletter and on each Sunday bulletin.
  • To support members of our community with prayer

A notebook is available for reference in the Library providing directions to most of the nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and hospitals in Boston and the North Shore.  Also available are books on prayer and caring networks.
